What are spider veins?
Spider veins or telangiectasias are a common condition affecting approximately every fourth person. Spider veins are insufficient veins in the skin layer. Spider veins measure up to a couple of millimeters and form bigger and smaller networks, giving them the name – spider veins. Usually spider veins present a cosmetic problem but can also be a sign of a more serious condition, i.e. chronic venous insufficiency.
How are spider veins treated?
Treatment of spider veins begins with accurate diagnostics – Duplex ultrasound scan of the legs. Spider veins may be caused by an underlying incompetent perforator or insufficient truncal vein. Visible spider veins can be treated only after the underlying problems have been addressed.
Spider veins can be treated with sclerotherapy and laser therapy.
